The Perfect Disguise

I was taking my daily walk across the field and saw this butterfly resting on the ground. As I don’t often get the chance to take a photo of one I got my phone out and pressed video by mistake. I was glad I did, as the way the butterfly detected a potential threat (me looming over it) showed me something important about our protectors. As well as her beautiful unique markings on her upper wings she also has a perfect disguise on her lower wings so that she can disappear in a split second into the background when needed, making herself small and unremarkable. Our parts do sometimes need that ability - to help us blend into the background when there is a threat - since we do sometimes encounter people or situations where showing our colours would be unwise and unsafe. It’s not a bad thing in itself to have a means of escape or camouflage. This is where discernment comes in – did our parts develop in such an unsafe environment that they rarely allow our true nature to show? Have they grown to assume bad intent by others in order to increase the odds of being safe?  It may be that you are still in a place that is unsafe and need these protections to be as active as they are. Or it may be that you are now safe but the impact of the past still feels alive to some of your parts. Take a moment today to ask these discerning questions – and thank those protectors who have been doing the best that they know how.
